Ashton Cobb is a skilled and experienced strong safety who
has played in the Division 1 College arena as well in the FXFL. He understands
that in order to be an effective defensive back, you not only need to be a fast
runner and skilled tackler but also an insightful player who can read into
plays and get one step ahead of the offense. Below are some of the essentials
elements that are implemented in training for defensive backs.
Pressure
Good defensive backs know how to keep pressure on their
opponent during passing plays and ultimately disrupt and control the route that
the opponent has to run in order to catch the ball. On running plays, good
backs understand that they are their team’s last line of defense and that they
must be careful in not letting anyone get past them.
Coverage
When playing in a defensive back position, coverage of the
backfield is always a very crucial aspect to maintain. Having solid coverage
means the offense is given very little opportunity to move the ball in the
backfield, forcing them to make shorter plays. This ultimately increases the
number of downs, which can help create 4th downs or even more windows for error
for the ball to be turned over in interceptions to fumbles.
